Why could this house have a musty smell?

My husband and I found the perfect home. Problem is the home is musty all throughout. The basement is all carpeted and the upstairs has hardwood and carpet. The previous renters supposedly had pets and that is what the smell is from, but they only lived there 6 weeks. They also trashed the house, but it is still very nice.

There hasn't been anyone living in the house for 3 or 4 months.. To me the smell seems musty not like animal pee. Also on the outside of the brick house there is a large crack in the brick that is about an inch wide. I am starting to wonder if there is a leak and this is mold???? I had mentioned this but was told it was animal pee and not mold and mildew.

I have bad allergies and cannot live in a musty home. What can clean this?? What should we do??? Should I ask to see a homeowners inspection???? We are just interested in renting this home for now but may buy it in 2 years.

I'd have the carpets cleaned and air the place out.
Locked up houses can get a musty smell at times.
