We are considering erecting a paling fence around our pool and need to construct a gate.
I understand the gate has to be self closing but I'm unsure how such a heavy timber gate would close.
Is it possible to make a self closing gate from timber that will comply to pool regulations?

Your best option is to construct the frame from steel similar to the photos attached.
I constructed these from 25x 25mm uprights with 50x25mm 1.6mm Gal cross members.

Bob I notice many gates with cross bracing running from corner to corner is this needed? I see many gates with these and they really ruin the appearance of the gate.

Bob how do you make the gate self closing do you use a huge spring?

Yes you could use a large spring but you can purchase self closing hinges spring loaded.
I usually use a hinge system that contains a spring that feeds up inside the 25x25mm box steel section.
If you are using round tube steel for a gate frame you can purchase a two part hinge system that is known as a Gudgeon hinge set up.
The self closing hinge gudgeon system is a little more expensive and it can be adjusted by turning the base to adjust the tension on the spring.
